Abstract: The concept of ecosystem services (ES) has become important in the discourse on integrated water resources management. As a tool in ES-based governance, many markets for watershed ES have been developed, which raises questions on the relationship between the institutional design of these markets and their performance. The main findings of a systematic review of 132 journal articles on markets for watershed ES are that market performance is usually equated with effectiveness, a large variety of institutional design characteristics are treated in the literature, but only very few papers actually discuss how institutional design may influence market performance.
